I was once in a punt when the girl (not unattractive, wearing jeans and I can't remember what else) doing the punting (that means she was standing on the back of a long, thin, flat-bottomed boat and pushing it along with a long aluminium pole) "fell" in. I didn't see it happen, and I don't think the other two guys in the punt did either. There were no other punts around so probably no witnesses to the genuineness of the fall. I heard a splash and by the time I looked round she was standing chest-deep in the river, about three punt-lengths away.
It was clear from her attitude after we'd hauled her back on board that she didn't mind getting wet. But... although standing up on a boat may look, and even feel, precarious, I've known lots of complete beginners who have managed to avoid falling in. So I conclude that, at the very least, she was careless - literally, that is she didn't care if she got wet. But I've always wondered if she *did* care: not about staying dry, but cared enough to deliberately jump. It's quite a fine dividing line, and maybe it doesn't matter, since the end result is much the same. |

By Justin - Tue 17/05/05 10:57:45 GMT Hi everyone
It occured to me that going punting in Oxford or Cambridge might be a good place to experience wetlook. I just wondered if any of you have seen anything decent or is punting a bit of a damp squib (so to speak).
Cheers,
Justin.
