If you think about where the internet was 5,10,15 years ago compared to where it is today, you'd realize that it isn't all that far-fetched. Yes, the backbones are a bottleneck, but the whole internet is getting choked with spam so we're not able to get the benefit of its full potential. I think spam war is probably going to be won in the not too distant future, and every element of the internet is undergoing upgrades almost constantly. Add to that the fact that cable service providers are already offering broadband at up to 10 Mb/s (my service now claims 5 Mb/s) and I think my blue-sky picture is attainable in less than 5 years, perhaps only 1 or 2.

In reply to Message (9212.3.2.1) Yeah, that'll be next week then
By SteveH - SteveH42@Hotmail.Com Wed 17/03/04 06:21:33 GMT sorry to sound sarcastic mate, but when everyone has a fast local connection and is trying to watch online videos the whole Internet backbone will come grinding to a complete standstill !

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Wed 17/03/04 04:59:23 GMT I think DVD is becoming the way to go for best resolution, replacing tape. For the time being, DVD is also a better option than web for long scenes at high resolution, but that's only because of the enormous bandwidth requirement to deliver comparable quality and quantity over the web. I should say that Styx has made some impressive strides in producing hi-rez content for web delivery, and their visual style is top notch. It's pretty clear that when consumer connections to the internet (eg DSL and cable) become capable of delivering throughputs in the range of 10 megabit per second, and commercial connections can provide 1 gigabit per second or better outbound, internet delivery will truly be on the same footing as DVD... we're not far off that now.

By Nigel - nigel@wetlook.com Wed 17/03/04 00:18:54 GMT Website: www.wetlook.com Most of the video clips available online are of much lower resolution and quality than VHS tapes or DVD - okay you have to wait for them to be delivered, but you get a great quality video, that you can watch over and over again.
