If you just click on a link, your browser sends the complete address of the page you are coming from (that is http://forum.minxmovies.com/showc.cgi?36727.1.1 in this case) to the target server. This is called a "referer" (sic!) request header line.
Some target server's request handlers are set up in a way that they forbid "deep linking", i. e. targeting a sub-page or even a picture directly from "outside".
If you copy the address into the address line of your browser then the browser doesn't know where you "come from", and it doesn't send a "referer" header. As a result, you get an error message instead of an HTML page or a picture.
Furthermore, some social networking sites (Webshots? Flickr?) present their users a list or these referrers, and some users don't like to be linked from a "fetish" site.
There are plugins or option setting available for major browsers to disable referrers. Instead of copying, in Firefox you can also drag the link with the mouse and drop it onto the address or tab bar to open the page while suppressing the referrer.

By uwe - Tue 05/08/08 07:00:58 GMT It's an offtopic question but I always ask myself about the difference between a link and copy/paste. So: Can anybody tell me the technical reason why sometimes a link doesn't word but copy/paste does?
