It is a rite of passage that apprentices have to go thru when they complete their apprenticeship.
In Germany the apprentices are dunked in a bath and then made to drink some shots of liquor.
In the UK they have similar traditions for apprentices if you work in the print trade...but these are messy events, not wet events...i.e. in the UK print trade the apprentices are tarred and feathered.
There is also a similarity here in the traditions for crossing the international date line....so if you are on a cruise ship and you cross the date line...they normally have a similar dunking ceremony

These ceremonies are similar to the "hazing" ceremonies that students in the U.S. endure...and the "rag week" events that UK university students go thru.
