WetDane is right. "Gautschen" is an old-fashioned expression and has to do with paper making. in short: tzhe dissolved cellulosis fibres are pressed against a fine wire mesh, the water is squeezed out, and the paper is made, just awaiting further drying.
As a kind of "cruel" initiation rite the freshmen ( and women) are treated by dunking to wash the impurities of their three years of apprenticeship off them. My dad went through this when he was a young type-setter and did it later to many young colleages as a master of his trade. With the advent of computers in the printig shops, this old tradition did not get extinct, as the printers' union amalgamated with the rest of the media people. Anyone who learns any trade in the media business is now "threatened" with this joke, office staff, journalists,printers,... The only - positive- change has been, that it is no longer done in the back of the paper storeroom or at the parking lot but in full view of anybody on market places and the like. |

By Wetdane - Mon 28/09/09 12:18:08 GMT These dunkings have nothing to do with the beerfest (Oktoberfest). They are called Gautchfeier and they are an old tradition in the printing business. Before an apprentice can call himself (of herself :-) ) a skilled printer he (or she :-) ) have to go through the ritual of a soaking. Normally the victim receives a beer after the soaking which may be the reason you assume it has something to do with the Oktoberfest.
One frequent contributor to this forum have hundreds of Gautchfeier pictures at this link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wfpics/sets/
