I am not sure why I grew up so repressed. It’s clearly not a universal characteristic of the British people, so maybe it was just specific to my own upbringing. My thought process has always revolved around details and objectives, even as a child, and normal human fun was always somehow alien: something I craved but never understood.

What intrigues me, is that I grew up with this notion that women don’t like looking dishevelled — that being seen with wet hair is a mortifying experience. Wet hair was a kind of “forbidden” occurrence: that hair is supposed to stay dry and in perfect form any time anyone else sees it. Getting it wet is strictly reserved for situations like showering when you’re already in complete privacy.

Trying to reconcile my misconceptions with reality causes me no end of pain, not least that things that I have assigned special value to, seem to be meaningless to most. Hair up, or down, during swimming, seems to be a largely meaningless distinction to most, and it hurts to see that mental conception torn down.

(The irony is that I am largely against make-up: I deem it to be a waste of money, time and effort, and harmful to your skin, for the sake of trying to achieve a deceitful level of perfection. Although it can work to good effect when expertly applied, its transient nature is where it falls down for me.)

(And yes, I am clearly too fucked up in the head to make friends/lovers …)

i have long hair, always found it more comfortable untied, when its tied its like one big lump, when its untied the individual hairs flow without any real weight under water

when coming out of the water its more comfortable as well, it will lay flat and dry better.

from a wetlook point of view it feels alot better, same way a big light weight summer dress feels when it gets wet and you feel it clinging while its still dripping wet, long hair does a similar thing, it feels like a sensual wetness clinging to your shoulders and back while its still very wet, it soon turns to being just wet after a while and its alot better loose than tied,

for me at least.

Swimming: hair tied or untied?

Something that has intrigued me for a while, that there seems to be no documented answer for:

When swimming with long hair, what are the pros and cons of leaving it loose, versus tying it up? I would have figured, logically, that girls/women would prefer to tie it up to keep it out the way and maybe allow for less tangling, but so many people leave their hair untied, at least in social situations. When going swimming for exercise, tied up is probably more the case, but for pool parties and the like, untied seems to be more common.

Anyone have any idea, maybe from wives/girlfriends etc?
